Sir John Macdonald, in full Sir John Alexander Macdonald, (born January 11, 1815, Glasgow, Scotland—died June 6, 1891, Ottawa, Ontario, Dominion of Canada), the first prime minister of the Dominion of Canada (1867–73, 1878–91), who led Canada through its period of early growth. The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), a transcontinental line connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific, was a key component of Sir John A. MACDONALD ’s National Policy. A proposal used to secure British Columbia’s entry into confederation in 1871, it became an unparalleled engineering challenge and took 15 years to complete. One of Sir John A. Macdonald’s campaign promises in the 1870s was that he would have a railway built that would link the country from coast to coast. Most certainly his experience of regularly travelling by train from Ottawa to Fraserville (designated as Rivière-du-Loup in 1919) and back enabled him to imagine the wider benefits of a national railway.
