The first thing to know about a hexblade is that eventually eldritch blast becomes the best option for damage, as at level 11 you get three attacks (if you take improved pact weapon at level five you'll be able to keep up damage-wise until level eleven).

It's harder in a dungeon where you don't have as much room, but I still do my best to stay at least 20' away from melee when we're indoors except when I need to get closer to cast Cure Wounds on someone.
